Who is Karl Malone?

NBA Hall of Fame Player Karl Malone, "The Mailman"

Karl Malone was born in Summerfield, Louisiana, and was the youngest of nine children. He led his high school basketball team to three consecutive Louisiana Class C titles from 1979 to 1981.

In his college years, he enrolled at Louisiana Tech University and joined the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs' basketball team during his second year, playing under coach Andy Russo. At the end of his second season with the Bulldogs, the team finished the season 29-3, at the top of the Southland Conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the very first time in the school's history. He gained the nickname "The Mailman" because he always delivered.

During the 1985 NBA draft, Malone was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 13th overall pick, despite believing he was going to be selected by the Dallas Mavericks. In his first year with the Utah Jazz, he made the 1986 NBA All-Rookie Team.

During the better part of the 1980s and 90s, Karl Malone’s Jazz teams dominated the NBA’s western conference. Teaming up with John Stockton, Karl found the perfect point guard to match his game. They would become the most dominating and iconic duo in NBA history with their unstoppable pick and roll. Karl’s Jazz teams made the playoffs every year, reaching the Finals in '97 and '98.

Karl Malone’s career achievements includes: 2x Olympic Gold Medal, 2x League MVP, 2x All Star Game MVP, 14x All Star, 11x All-NBA First Team, 3x All-Defensive First Team.

Karl also put his name high on a lot of NBA record books, most notably finishing his 19-year career as the 2nd all time career point leader in NBA history, with 36,928. He also finished 6th in games played (1,476), 2nd in minutes played (54,852), 2nd in Field Goals (13,528), Field Goal attempts (26,210), 1st in Free Throws (9,787) and 1st in Free Throw attempts (13,188).

Karl Malone has become widely considered one of the greatest power forwards and players of all time.
